Ramona Flowers Crochet-Inspired Costume

Surprise! For Halloween, I chose to dress up as Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’ve seen it so much that I can quote it word for word. She’s a great & very interesting character, who’s a bit mysterious and very cool, but she also cares about People. Her style is indie/alternative, and she wears bright colors, such as her tights and her ever changing hair.

The major character inspiration.

Thankfully, I had most of the garments already in my closet, so all I had to worry about were filling in the specific character style attributes. I acquired a hot pink wig, [one of her signature looks) a green canvas button down shirt, a studded belt, a denim skirt (that I actually upcycled from a pair of shorts), bright blue tights, and a pair of black combat boots. I just had to create a pair of crocheted goggles [this was actually my first time making a pair!) and finally the look was complete!

The Iconic Sweater

For the crochet top, I made a long-sleeved purple sweater, and made sure that it was long enough so that when I wore the jacket, the sleeves would be exposed. Ramona likes to layer. So I really wanted to make sure that I got that part just right. I then crocheted two long rows of stripes, one bright blue and the other the hot pink, for that blast & pop of color Ramona had on Her shirt as well. I then attached the stripes to the front of the crochet top, emulating the original design!

The Starry Bag

I had to make her bag! I crocheted this circular messenger using the same blue yarn as on the shirt, and made a large crocheted pink for the star applique. I just attached the star to the front of the bag and then I had to make sure the strap was long enough to give it the super casual vibe, and it's an accessory that ties it all together.

It’s Hammer Time!

And of course, I had to make her famous hammer. Using a cardboard box, I had leftover (I collect them to use them for projects!) I covered it with fabric, then measured the box. Crocheting Rows in panels to fully cover the box, then with hot glue I applique the grey crocheted rows to the box-turning it into a faux hammer! Also, I used a pole for the handle (from broom lol) as the handle!

The Crochet Goggles

This was entirely the item I was fearing to make the most! I was entirely looking back and forth at the pair Ramona had on, & how I went about creating it was all free hand. Starting off making the lens, creating rows, then folding them over, attaching them to offer a bit of texture and weight to the glasses. Then I made the straps, adding on those special details for that realistic look, the like metal buckets!

It’s truly hard to pick a favorite costume, but this one feels very special to me because everything came out exactly how I wanted it to. Even though I was really unsure of how the crocheted goggles were going to come out looking! Honestly, this costume feels like a proper homage to one of my favorite films.
