Refreshing a Crochet and Patchwork Top Into a Romper

It might seem like creating crochet projects comes easily when you see the finished results, but making anything is a trial-and-error process. In the past, I would get frustrated when something didn’t turn out how I wanted it to, and my knee-jerk reaction is to set it aside, But in the spirit of preservation and personal growth, I’ve learned (& still learning!) to embrace the mistakes and turn them into brand new ideas.

The Dream Crochet Upcycled Romper

Awhile ago, I made this patchwork denim and crochet top. When Joann Stores [I miss it!] introduced their Lucky Denim Fabric Collaboration, I picked some of it up to create with it. At first I loved the concept I created, but after time, I decided the design needed to evolve a bit-so I pushed it aside for a long time. While going through my inventory I found it again, and with my new vibe & mindset, I immediately started to think of what else I could turn it into.

I posted The Dream Crochet Design Refresh for the upcycled romper on the Instagram, and I had so much fun with it. I tried out new video editing techniques to really make it shine, and showed the before and after. Something so simple and once disregarded has become an important part of my collection and I'm inspired to do this more often.

At first, I thought about making it into a dress, but I was currently creating a few dresses & I haven’t made a romper in awhile. Also, it felt more obvious and I wanted it to be unexpected. I went with a romper because the garment has a sense of playfulness to it, and I actually need more rompers. I love it when style and function intersect.

I had more of the light blue color, so I knew that the there would be enough material would be enough to make something fabulous. So I made a crocheted waistband tied with a bow, and at the bottom of the crocheted shorts. I actually went back to the design after I finished & created more width & added on the lace inspired trim detailing. All to make the crochet shorts to have more wider openings & to make it more breezy. I love this project so much now, and that’s the beauty of returning to a design & not giving up on ideas.
